Self Care 101: Get Hydrated

One of the best things you can do to take care of yourself is to stay hydrated. Drinking water is the best way for most people to stay hydrated. You can get water by drinking it or from eating foods that have a high water content like fruit (especially melon) and vegetables. You can also drink other liquids to get hydrated but it's best to avoid sugary drinks and drinks with caffeine. Instead try a drink with high electrolytes and low sugar (like coconut water) or a cup of green tea.

  • Water helps cleanse your body by flushing out toxins

  • Drinking water helps your skin stay healthy.

  • Water can help with headaches.

  • Staying hydrated makes it easier for the heart to pump.

  • Water helps the muscles work better.

If you're at all like me you might find it difficult to stay hydrated. Sometimes water upsets my stomach and sometimes I just can't make myself drink enough water. Here are some things you can try to stay more hydrated every day. I'm not a doctor and this isn't medical advice. These are just some things you can decide to try or not that might help.

  • Get a water bottle that you really like, fill it up at the beginning of the day and before you leave the house, and carry it with you everywhere.

  • Install a water reminder app on your phone. There are a lot of different ones but most of them use your weight to calculate the amount of water you should drink during a day and remind you drink water with notifications throughout the day. They also let you record how much water (and some other liquids) you drink.

  • Get a special drink that you'll be excited to drink instead of just water. Maybe you can infuse your water with mint or fruit, maybe you would like a different drink entirely. When I get really tired of drinking water I get one or two coconut water sports drinks and drink one each day besides plain water for a little bit of a break from water.

  • Enjoy fruit and vegetables throughout the day, with meals or for snacks. They'll help supplement your water levels.
